History tour group wowed by European landmarks

May 2, 2024

A group of 16 senior students and teachers made the most of their recent two-week history tour to Italy and Germany, visiting some of the structures and sites they have been studying in their Ancient History and Modern History syllabuses.

The tour is part of the NBCS Global Opportunities program, which provides enriching learning experience for students, ranging from curriculum tours  related to specific subject areas, to cultural immersions, service and leadership initiatives, sports tours and more.

The history tour group spent several days exploring the major sites of Rome – with tours of the magnificent Colosseum, the Forum and the Pantheon. They also visited Vatican City, the Sistine Chapel and St Peter’s Basilica before trips to Herculaneum, Naples, Pompeii and a day in beautiful Sorrento, exploring the shops and city.

In Berlin, the group explored key landmarks such as the iconic Brandenburg Gate, symbolising unity and resilience, and the Berlin Wall. They also visited the solemn Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, the Berlin Story Bunker museum and the Neues Museum, which features some famous ancient Egyptian artefacts, including the world-famous Nefertiti.

Travelling to Nuremberg on ANZAC Day set the stage for the group’s exploration of pivotal Nazi sites, including the Nazi Party Rally grounds. They also visited the Nuremberg Trials, where 24 of the elite Nazis were tried after World War II. The tour guide provided information that tied in well with the HSC Modern History syllabus of Power and Authority. An exploration of Munich and a visit to Dachau Concentration Camp were the final stops of the tour before returning home.
