Love Learning

News from Northern Beaches Christian School
Term 3, 2025

Tim Watson, Principal

From the Principal

I love to read. I agree with Stephen King that “books are a uniquely portable magic”, and with Mary Schmich that, “reading is a discount ticket to everywhere”.

Books help to lay the foundation for literacy and cultural knowledge, particularly for young children. This is perhaps the most significant learning foundation that we can provide for our children and students.

Read books. Read books to your children. Start early. Start often. And
keep doing it well past the point at which they develop reading fluency.
If there is one thing that parents can do to help (younger) children with their learning, it is to spend time with them in the world of ideas and books, reading.

You’re invited!

We warmly invite you to two exhibitions of Major Projects created by our talented HSC students.

Our HSC TAS students will showcase their major works from Textiles & Design, Industrial Technology, and Design & Technology on:

Wednesday 20 August
5 – 7pm
MPC at NBCS

Our HSC Visual Arts students will exhibit their Bodies of Work alongside the Major Projects by our Society & Culture, Science Extension, and English Extension 2 students on:

Tuesday 2 September
4 – 6pm
MPC at NBCS

Both exhibitions serve as a testament to the dedication, creativity, and growth of the students over the course of their studies. Our NBCS community, family and friends are all welcome to attend (no RSVP needed).

NBCS students will have the opportunity to take part in football training with the BVB Youth Development program.

New football opportunity in 2026

Announcing a football academy program in partnership with German club Borussia Dortmund (BVB).

NBCS is excited to announce a new partnership with the German International School Sydney (GISS), the Youth Development Partner of one of Germany’s most prominent professional football clubs – Borussia Dortmund (BVB).

Best known for its Bundesliga team and commitment to developing young players, Borussia Dortmund has established a global network of youth development centres. This new initiative will bring their expertise directly to interested boys and girls at NBCS, from Kindergarten through to Year 11.

Commencing in 2026, NBCS students will have the opportunity to participate in the term-time BVB training program alongside GISS students throughout the year. The program will be led by an experienced BVB youth development coordinator. Sessions will be tailored to the age and skill level of participants to ensure appropriate development.

As an introductory offer, the academy program will be available at a cost of $360 per term (based on one session per week across a 9-week term). Additional sessions may be offered as the program expands.

Our students were excited to hear a presentation in Term 3 on BVB’s program by their Ambassador Paul Lambert and Academy Director Christian Diercks.

Australian junior tennis champ and NBCS student Lachlan McFadzean launched himself on the pro tennis circuit in July and then sat his HSC trials.

Supporting elite athletes to pursue their dreams

Three elite athletes from Northern Beaches Christian School (NBCS) are currently excelling on national and international stages — all while staying fully engaged with their academic studies, thanks to the school’s support.

Year 12 student Lachlan McFadzean, an internationally ranked junior tennis player, earned his first ATP points in July, officially stepping into the world of professional tennis.

Fellow Year 12 student Joshua Lee dominated at the Australian Schools Diving Championships in July, bringing home five national titles — just a week before sitting his HSC trials.

Year 10 student Chelsea McCredie was recently named on the U17 Junior Matildas Monitored Player list, identifying her as a rising football talent in Australia.

Elite athletes commit to countless hours of training, travel, and competition, often making academic consistency a challenge. However, NBCS ensures students don’t have to choose between their sport and their studies.

“A lot of people in my position would simply do online school, but it’s isolating,” says Lachlan. “School is good because it provides balance, and I get to see my mates.”

NBCS Head of Co-curricular, Stewart van Bentum, says the school is proud to support high-performing students in all areas. “We make sure that while learning at school is our key approach, students can also access online learning from wherever they are in the world,” he explains. “It’s about providing structure and connection so they can pursue excellence in both arenas.”

When asked how he manages the demands of dual commitments, Lachlan puts it simply: “When I’m playing tennis, I’m super focused on that, and when I’m at school, I focus hard on that.”

Dance teams shine

The NBCS Junior Performance Dance Troupe placed first in the prestigious ‘Ultimate Dance Challenge’.

Up against some of the state’s top dance schools, they delivered a faultless, high-energy routine to win the Jazz category.

“Their commitment, teamwork and positivity were as impressive as their performance,” said dance coordinator Mrs Brooke Kelly. “A huge congratulations to the dancers and their dedicated coaches for representing our school with such pride and excellence.”

At the end of Term 2, both senior and junior teams competed in the Sydney Performance Arts Competition, with every routine placing. This is an outstanding achievement for a dance program that only began in 2024.

The program is expanding and introduced a high-energy Hip-hop class for Primary boys this term.

The NBCS community is invited to the Dance Showcase on Monday 22 September.
