News from Northern Beaches Christian School
Term 4, 2025

Tim Watson, Principal

From the Principal

We are fortunate to have a wonderful campus at NBCS. During the past seven years, we have been able to upgrade, refurbish, and add to our built environment.

We have undertaken three significant projects to improve the form and function of the school, including the building of the Primary Playground, the creation of the Library, and most recently, the completion of the Science building that nestles into the heart of the campus.

In addition to these works, we have refurbished almost every classroom in the school, by creating separate classroom spaces, by changing room footprints, by incorporating air conditioning and acoustic ceilings, as well as by updating fit outs, layouts and furniture.

We have a beautiful campus that is fit for purpose. And yet we do not want to put our feet up, rest on our laurels and say that the job is done. We want to honour the work of those who have gone before. We want to honour the families and staff whose contribution we have inherited, whose hard work, planning and wise use of resources has given us what we have today.

To do this, we are commencing a major Masterplanning process to shape the next stage of our campus development. Working with project managers Midson Group and leading architects AJC (Allen Jack + Cottier), we are mapping both our immediate priorities and our long-term vision for the school through to 2050. This process will consider everything from practical upgrades, like additional bathrooms and bubblers, to larger-scale facilities, like an auditorium, ultimately guiding a coordinated plan that supports exceptional learning and student experience in the years ahead.

NBCS graduate and young entrepreneur, Ben Lenehan. Below: with teachers Candice Gibson and Thomas Levin at the Peter Farrell Cup.

Young entrepreneur headed for success

It’s been a huge year for NBCS graduate and entrepreneur Ben Lenehan. Right after his graduation in September, he pitched his business at the UNSW Peter Farrell Cup finals, beating hundreds of other applicants to take second place and $10,000.

Weeks later, just after his HSC Advanced English exam, Ben went to the Hunter Valley to install his own renewable energy system in a home set to appear on Grand Designs Australia.

Ben is the founder of Watergate Labs, a renewable-tech startup turning water into electricity. The idea began in Year 10 when he built a moisture-powered energy panel, and it’s grown through access to UNSW postgraduate labs.

This year, Watergate Labs was accepted into the Federal Government’s Industry Growth Program, giving Ben’s team a climate-tech adviser and pathways to major grant funding.

“We’re very proud of Ben, how he’s embraced the challenges and joys of learning, and we trust he’ll do even more extraordinary things in the future,” says Principal Tim Watson.

NBCS Primary students help prepare gift boxes for Operation Christmas Child, just one of the many service projects and fundraisers undertaken by NBCS students this year.

Making the world a better place

Our Primary students have been busy packing shoeboxes with toys, gifts, and school supplies for Operation Christmas Child.

Just one of many fundraisers and service projects that happen every term at NBCS, this wonderful project delivers not only the joy of giving to those less fortunate, but is also a tangible expression of God’s love. Our students have loved carefully selecting items for their boxes, knowing their gifts will bring hope and happiness to a child in need.

In Term 4, Year 9 took the lead in supporting National Bandanna Day, CanTeen’s annual fundraising and awareness event to support young people impacted by cancer. Our students sold bandannas and encouraged online donations, with a total of $2,642 raised!

In Term 3, Primary students welcomed their elderly friends from the Terrey Hills Nursing Home for afternoon tea on campus. Each week, small groups of Year 3–6 students visit the home to connect, play games, chat and sing with residents, but this time, residents joined us at school for the first time. They were greeted by home-grown flowers, afternoon tea, music performances and welcoming hand-drawn posters, making it a memorable visit for everyone.

Mrs Gray with her successful HSC Textiles & Design class, whose major works were all nominated for the prestigious state-wide SHAPE showcase event.

Textiles class achievement

For the first time at NBCS, an entire HSC Textiles & Design class has had their major works nominated for inclusion in the prestigious SHAPE exhibition.

Michelle Gray, who has been teaching textiles at NBCS for more than a decade is incredibly proud of all six of her students.

“I’ve had a student nominated or selected for SHAPE or TexStyle every year that I’ve been at NBCS,” she said. “This class is arguably the most successful cohort.”

Mrs Gray gets excited to see her students being inspired by everything around them. “They all have drive and energy. And they’ve seen what students before them can produce, so they’re inspired by the quality of the work. It’s really lovely.”

Julie Smith and Hayley Jacobs cut the ribbon to open the new Pre-K classroom, which will be used in 2026.

Pre-K classroom officially opened

In Term 4, our Head of Primary Julie Smith was delighted to cut a ribbon and officially open the new Pre-K space.

During 2025, many staff have been involved in the transformation of the ‘Imaginarium’ classroom into a beautiful early education space.

In 2026, this calm, inviting room, with its secure, well-appointed outdoor play areas will be the home of our new ‘Little Learners’ Pre-K class, taught by Mrs Jacobs.

Limited places are still available. Contact our Registrar at enrol@nbcs.nsw.edu.au for Pre-K enrolment information.

Telling our story

You may have noticed new NBCS videos popping up on your social media feed.

Behind the scenes, we’ve been busy creating a new series of school videos, designed to showcase the heart of NBCS as well as the School’s offerings and unique features.

“It’s been six years since the last school videos were made, and there have been quite a few changes since then,” says Melanie Collins, Director of Marketing. “It’s time for a fresh look at our beautiful campus and our Love Learning vision.”

With candid interviews from students, parents and teachers, as well as some stunning shots of school life on campus, we’re delighted to introduce you to one of our new videos below, and are excited to unveil the rest of the videos over the next few weeks. You can find them on our website, and online.
