Music

Music is an important element in the lifeblood of our school community

It provides a positive, powerful way to bring our community together and reflects our creative, collaborative approach to learning.

NBCS is known for its strong music foundation and pioneering practice. Our music lessons provide the opportunities of a music studio, supporting student interest across all styles of music. Students are empowered to participate in and take ownership of the whole music process – from learning an instrument, to writing music, performing and production.

We take a holistic approach to our Music program – bringing together learning within class time and opportunities within our various bands and ensembles.

Concert bands and ensembles

There are many pathways to developing a passion and ability in music:

Senior Concert Band

The school’s premier concert band, the Senior Concert Band is for advanced woodwind, brass and percussion players.

Concert Band

For students in Year 3 upwards, with minimum 1 year’s playing experience on their instrument, the Concert Band performs extensively throughout the school year, and develops numerous skills in students.

Rock & POP Bands

Rock and Pop Bands are for students who play drums, bass guitar, electric guitar, keys, or sing, and would like to be involved in selecting their own repertoire, and performing with a small ensemble.

Vocal Ensembles

We have a range of Vocal Ensembles are for Primary and Secondary students who love to be part of a fun and dynamic singing group. Students will get the opportunity to sing a variety of music styles in an ensemble setting.

String Ensembles

Debut: For students comfortable reading music, and keen to learn pieces in a small group setting.

Senior: For more advanced string players, with a strong grasp of reading music, who are keen to play challenging pieces in a small group setting.

Performance Opportunities

Students may participate as performers, technicians, costume designers, choreographers, or musicians. Through their experience in Performing Arts at NBCS, many students have been accepted into highly competitive performing arts courses in universities across Australia, and gone on to work professionally in the entertainment industry.

School Events and Recital Nights

Bands and ensembles regularly perform at school events, school assemblies and recital nights. They also give casual performances at NBCS, during lunch breaks.

Competitions, Eisteddfods & Public Venues

Bands and ensembles may also have the opportunity to perform off-site, and to take part in local eisteddfods and competitions, including the Northern Beaches Eisteddfod, and other public venues.

Music Camps, Tours and Workshop Days

Music Camps, Tours and Workshop Days are focused opportunities for the Senior Concert Band, Concert Band and Debut Concert Band, as well as some of the other ensembles, to work on their musicianship, and develop as individuals and ensembles.

Musicals

At NBCS, we have established a proud tradition of producing professional-quality shows in our state-of-the-art performance space, the Marina Prior Centre. Each year, students have the opportunity to participate in a fully produced Broadway Musical, under the guidance of an industry professional actor and choreographer, and an outstanding and experienced creative team.
