The Bush Kindy program for Pre-K at Northern Beaches Christian School launched this term, with NBCS’ youngest learners making the most of outdoor learning, exploration and discovery.
Mrs Julie Smith, Head of Primary at NBCS, and Mrs Hayley Jacobs, Pre-K teacher, have partnered with Dr Amanda Jones from Greater Sydney Parklands to develop the Bush Kindy program, which takes place every week in the Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park that neighbours the school.
As well as giving children the opportunity to nurture a deep emotional connection to the natural environment, Bush Kindy has been developed to support their emotional and physical wellbeing.
“We see this as more than a learning program,” said Mrs Smith. “It is a transformational wellbeing initiative, where children are forming deep connections to nature and discovering more about themselves, others and God’s world.”
The program also aligns with a broader purpose of caring for parklands and connecting communities.
“As our students learn in and from the bush, they are beginning to understand their role as caretakers of God’s creation, developing an appreciation for the land and a responsibility to protect it.”
Bush Kindy is also an opportunity for the school’s executive staff to get involved with the Pre-K class, with Principal Mr Tim Watson accompanying Pre-K into the national park recently.
“We are thrilled to see how beautifully this initiative is already taking shape,” Mrs Smith said.
