Love Learning
Welcome to our new NBCS newsletter, where once a term we share an update from our Registrar,
along with some of the news and events happening in the life of our school.
Term 1, 2024
From the Principal
At NBCS we are all about getting young people on a road to success … but what does that actually mean?
When I was asked “What does success mean to you?” I responded with these eight ideas.
First, the quality of your relationships will determine the quality of your life. Or, in terms of success, the success of your relationships will determine the success of your life.

Secondly, success, where possible, should not be a zero-sum game. The best success in business or life is where each party wins. Win-win leads to reciprocal rather than transactional approaches to life. The best deal is where both parties walk away happy.
Thirdly, trust is the currency that makes life possible. Trust should be our default position. Be trustworthy and imagine that others will be likewise. Most of the time, you will be right.
Fourth, if you want to be successful, own it. Stop making excuses or blaming others when things go wrong or don’t go the way you wanted or hoped. Success is being accountable.
Fifth, success means knowing what you believe and why, being open about it and happy to engage with others openly and non-defensively. Success is also not being threatened when others hold different ideas.
Sixth, people matter more than things. If you don’t, won’t or can’t understand this and live it out, it won’t matter how much you have, you won’t find it fulfilling.
Seventh. Stuff. Ideas. Relationships. Experiences. Most people are driven by these things, separately or in combination. Know which one matters most to you or what balance suits you best.
And finally, real wealth is measured in time and generosity.

Meet our School Captains
The 2024 Secondary and Primary Captains are working hard to lead, inspire and nurture our students. We caught up with them to discuss their thoughts about leadership, being a School Captain and their plans for the year.
Jed Hawkins | Secondary Captain
“I have been at NBCS since I was 6. I couldn’t ask for a better community to be a part of. This role requires you to be adaptable and ready for change. You have to put yourself out there and develop some form of robust confidence.”
Carys Locke | Secondary Captain
“To me, service is at the core of true leadership. My love for school has always been rooted in a desire to give back and contribute to building an incredible school culture and environment for everyone.”
Will Garske | Primary Captain
“I’ve always hoped to one day become a School Captain. I just love the fact that you can run a club and talk in assembly and just lead by example.”
Hallie Owers | Primary Captain
“I want to demonstrate our school values of compassion, being kind to others, gratitude, being thankful for our amazing school, courage, being brave in public speaking, and respect.”
Coming to NBCS
Year 12 students Grace Barnes and Aidan McDonald are two of the ‘super troupers’ who’ll be singing and dancing in the NBCS production of Mamma Mia! at the end of Term 1.
Playing a lead role of Donna is a dream come true for Grace, who came to NBCS in Year 10 because of the yearly musical staged by the School. “Mamma Mia is like my childhood movie. I grew up watching it with my Grandma,” she said. One of the best parts of staging a production like Mamma Mia! is working with a whole team. “It’s not about you against another person. It’s not about another person against you,” said Aidan. “It’s about working together. The whole goal is to entertain other people.”
The cast and crew will put on four shows of Mamma Mia! at the NBCS Marina Prior Centre between Thursday 11 April and Saturday 13 April. Tickets are available now.
2023 Dux in HSC exhibition
Mr Watson and Textiles teacher Ms Gray were delighted to join 2023 HSC graduate Kelsey Smit and her parents at the opening of the HSC Shape exhibition recently. Shape displays exemplary major works from Design and Technology, Industrial Technology and Textiles and Design.
Kelsey finished second in the HSC in Textiles and Design, and her stunning African-inspired major project was selected for the exhibition.
As Dux of NBCS 2023 with an ATAR of 99.7, Kelsey led a year group that achieved the strongest set of HSC results by NBCS students to date.

Inaugural CRU Camp a colourful success
Term 1 saw 39 Secondary students attend the inaugural NBCS CRU Camp at Ingleside.
CRU is our extra-curricular volunteer group where students can explore Christianity and delve deeper into their faith.
With a camp theme of ‘grow’, in over just 24 hours, students hiked to the camp lookout, played a version of Capture the Flag and spent time learning, sharing and reading the Bible together.
“It was great to see students comfortably sharing their faith stories and also building strong connections that will boost the faith culture in CRU,” said Chaplain Mr Whitington.
