‘Tale as old as time’ coming to the NBCS stage in April

Big characters, lots of dancing, plenty of colour and some incredible special effects – that’s what audiences will enjoy at the upcoming performances of Beauty and the Beast at NBCS.

“The show is fantastic,” says Sam Husband who plays ‘Gaston’. “The cast is wonderful, and we’ve got such good leads. The tech team is working tirelessly. The lights are fantastic. We’ve got a massive chandelier coming down from the ceiling. It’s all here!”

Georgia Hickey, who plays lead role ‘Belle’ says the audience will love the classic Disney songs. “They’re famous, popular songs like ‘Be our guest’. Everyone knows them.”

Georgia played Mary Poppins in the 2025 NBCS musical of the same name and says that the two characters are “polar opposites”. “Mary makes everything happen, but everything happens to Belle,” she explains. “It’s been different to portray that character.”

Chris Blythe, who plays the Beast, has embraced the physicality of the role. “I have to hold myself a certain way. Even things like walking are done a certain way. I’ve had to move out of my comfort zone.”

Cast and crew who are in Year 12 are balancing a rigorous rehearsal schedule with their academic work, but Sam Husband who plays Gaston says the hard work put in by the staff is motivating. “All the teachers put so much work in,” he says. “Mr Owen is up at 1am working on the scripts, and staying back after school so long, doing all the lights. We have such a great team here.”

Staging a show like Beauty and the Beast might be a lot of work, but students come back year after year to be part of the annual NBCS musical. “I love the community,” says Tahlia Southey, who plays the enchanted candlestick, Lumiere. “All the friends you make in different years, and the whole experience and the hard work is so wonderful.”
