Singing together is powerful. It provides us with the opportunity to unify in a way that many other mediums do not allow: the same words are said; all voices are in tune; and everyone is in time. You will see it at concerts, sports stadiums, funerals and weddings. Most nations have an anthem that helps unite them!
For millennia, people of faith have used singing to demonstrate unity. Additionally, communal singing serves as a way to connect with God and with others who seek that connection.
As a Christian School, singing is a part of who we are. You will hear staff sing together on a Monday morning in The City. Secondary Chapel has two Chapel bands that perform each week. Primary students stand and sing together, and even have ‘songfest battles’ to see which grade is the loudest and most in tune.
As a special treat, the Chapel Band did not just perform a song in Secondary Chapel this week, but they got everyone on their feet singing with them. This is no easy feat, as teenagers do not always want to participate. However, by using the nostalgic power of the song ‘My Lighthouse’, Years 10-12 sang loudly with actions! It was special to see the unity, participation, energy, and fun that was had. Hopefully, in the near future, standing and singing together can become more of the norm than a ‘special thing’.
To finish our time together in the Final Chapel for Years 10-12, School Captain Carys Locke sang an item with Charlotte Buttrose (Year 11) and Mr Clarke. Carys chose to sing ‘Goodness of God’. She shared that the goodness of God has followed her throughout her life, and her hope is that others can discover this on their own faith journey.
