Bush Kindy an exciting learning adventure for Pre-K at NBCS

Jun 19, 2026

With the launch of our Pre K Bush Kindy program in 2026 we are thrilled to see how beautifully this initiative is already taking shape.

Mrs Hayley Jacobs and I were privileged to draw on the knowledge and expertise of Dr Amanda Jones from Greater Sydney Parklands in the development of the Bush Kindy program. It is a program grounded in place-based pedagogy and an ethic of sustainability, and we have been delighted to see our Pre K students being safe, respectful and engaged learners in this natural environment.

We see Bush Kindy as more than a learning program — it is a transformational wellbeing initiative, where children are forming deep connections to nature and discovering more about themselves, others and God’s world.

Our approach supports children’s emotional and physical wellbeing, while fostering environmental stewardship and advocacy, and nurturing a deep emotional connection to the natural environment, the beautiful Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park which we are fortunate to have next door.

This program aligns powerfully with a broader purpose of caring for parklands and connecting communities. As our students learn in and from the bush, they are beginning to understand their role as caretakers of God’s creation, developing an appreciation for the land and a responsibility to protect it.

Through Bush Kindy, we are nurturing opportunities for children to:

  • Connect spiritually, physically, emotionally and socially with the world around them
  • Experience environments where they can pause, breathe, explore and wonder
  • Grow in their understanding of how to care for and respect nature
  • Build confidence, resilience and wellbeing through outdoor learning

It has been wonderful to observe their growing understanding that time in nature is not only about exploration, but also about connection — with creation, with one another, and with God. As guardians of these spaces, we are committed to inspiring the next generation to protect, value and thoughtfully engage with the environment, so that it may be sustained for years to come. What a joy it is to see this vision already coming to life in our youngest learners.

The Bush Kindy program is one component of our Pre-K class at Northern Beaches Christian School. Our learning journey for four and five year olds encompasses early education and school readiness in a nurturing, play-based environment.

Pre-K students have the benefit of the whole school experience, joining the Infants group for events, and enjoying specialist teachers in subjects like French and Music. Our specialist teachers and bush kindy program build confidence, spark curiosity, and teach compassion as children explore their world. With a three- or five-day program to choose from, we establish a firm foundation for learning so that your child is confidently ready for big school.
